How Women Can Build Confidence in Leadership

By Edite Zadinane | High-Performance Leadership | 18 October 2026
Leadership confidence grows through preparation, practice and reflection. You do not have to feel completely ready before contributing to a meeting, asking a question or taking responsibility for a decision. You can build confidence by choosing one useful action and reviewing what happens.
Start with evidence
Write down three occasions when you solved a problem, supported another person or helped a group complete a task. Identify what you actually did. Specific examples give you a more useful picture of your strengths than a general judgement about whether you are a confident person.
Prepare your contribution
Before a meeting, decide on one point you want others to understand. Write it in a sentence, then add a short example. Practise saying it aloud. This can help you communicate clearly when you have limited time.
Make a clear request
Replace a vague intention such as “I should have more influence” with a practical request: “Can I lead the next project update?” Explain the contribution you can make and agree what success will look like.
Ask for useful feedback
Rather than asking whether you were good, ask what was clear and what could be more effective. Choose one improvement to practise next time.
Confidence is also influenced by the working environment. Leaders and employers have a responsibility to create fair opportunities, listen to contributions and address barriers. Individual development should sit alongside those responsibilities.
Try this today
Choose one situation you have been avoiding. Identify a small action you can take, the support you need and the date you will review your progress.
